This week I, unfortunately, got on the wrong direct bus 50 minutes in the wrong direction from my destination. It was dark, cold, and there wasn’t another bus for quite some time to get back to where I needed to go. I was tired and frustrated, and I didn’t feel like dropping $40 on a uber to get back to where I needed to go.
But lucky for me, a kind woman behind me offered to drive me to Boulder where my little brother lives so that he could get me back to my car. It was 30 minutes out her way to drive a stranger she didn’t know when she could’ve easily gone on with her life. I insisted on paying her, but all she told me was, “Please just pay it forward.”
That struck me, the sincere pure kindness of a stranger and all she wanted in return was for me to show that same level of empathy for someone else. It reminded me that there truly are some special people in the world, and it never ceases to amaze me how humanity can surprise you.
What was even cooler, was that she was also in the communications industry, and had actually worked at my favorite nonprofit, the Nature Conservancy. It really goes to show what a small world it is out there!
Anyways Ramblers, with this coming week being Thanksgiving and the giving season is right around the corner, I just wanted to remind you all the same piece of advice I just got….which is to pay it forward. A lot of times we get caught up in our lives, our own woes, and it can be really hard to appreciate the life you have. But it is extremely important to remember to be grateful and to give back because there’s always someone worse off or someone who could use your help.
So my mission this week is to find a way to pay it forward and to remember how great life can be despite the hard parts. I’m grateful for the wonderful family I have, the beautiful people in my life, my health, my kitten, various opportunities, and of course…the kind strangers that still exist out there.
This one's for you, Judy!
