Another Monday, another long week ahead!
I hope you all are refreshed from the weekend and feeling ready to take on the week. I’ll be out on Friday to get my wisdom teeth removed, so I’m trying to play catch up as much as I can before I’m incapacitated.
Sometimes, I feel like a huge scatterbrain with my mind running a mile a minute. Life is crazy busy, and it can be easy to let go of goals and get sidetracked. As I mentioned at the beginning of this year, I wanted to practice more mindfulness, and bullet journaling has been helping me to do that.
What is a Bullet Journal?
My favorite description of a Bullet Journal is “the analog method in a digital age.” While I still have my google calendars and digital lists reminders, the importance of unplugging and creating a space to gather your thoughts is vital. A Bullet Journal is essentially a hardcover, physical book where you can customize sections and write down things that matter. It’s a method for categorizing your life, reflecting on the day, and strategizing the goals you want to accomplish.
The Bullet Journal Method book was super helpful for me dive into the methodology and purpose behind bullet journaling. It takes you through the entire process, the different types of coding, and the best practices. I originally had an actual bullet journal to customize and build categories from scratch with, but then I also found a Day Designer planner that came with the different sections already built in. I ended up going with the pre-built one to save me time and ease me into the process.
Keep in mind though, most bullet journals are blank and completely customizable, and you can find some really pretty ones at Barnes and Noble. I just went with what I knew would be easier for me to devote to during the day. Also, most bullet journals have a set of code for labeling things like events, to-dos, and notes. My Bullet Journal Sections
I LOVE planning, I love schedules, and I love goals. My bullet journal planner allows for all of this. It includes a monthly calendar overview, a quote of the day for inspiration, Today’s Top 3, today’s schedule, the to-do list, notes for tonight, and a spot for reflection of gratitude at the end of the day. I enjoy having so many different sections to take advantage of, and it’s been incredibly useful in planning out my busy life. I will take 20 minutes every Sunday to fill out my week’s schedule, to-dos, and events. Then, in the evening after work while I’m riding the train home, I will take 10 minutes to fill out the reflection sections of my day and the goals for the next day.
o Monthly Calendar: This month-long quick overview is great for filling in upcoming events, important deadlines, and giving you a bird’s eye view of what lies ahead.
o Daily Schedule: I will write all of my meetings, evening plans, and workouts in this section. I also have a digital calendar, but this helps as well to keep track of things.
o Today’s Top Three: This is a section where you write the top 3 goals for that day. This helps keep your day on track and your goals front of mind. I often will write things like, “follow up with…., eat healthy, run at least 1 mile, etc.” I usually fill out this section the night before.
o Today’s To-Dos: This is where you can write all of your projects for the day. If you’re like me, there is nothing more satisfying then physically crossing out an item you finished.
o Quote of the Day: This is a fun section, and I love that my journal includes it. These quotes are great for inspiration and setting the mood for my day.
o Tonight: This is a fun little block section where you can write your unwinding plans, notes to remember from the day, or remaining to-dos.
o Gratitude: This is probably my favorite section, as it allows for a lot of reflection and mindfulness on each day, which is something I’m trying to get better at practicing. I really value this section because even if I had the worst possible day, it forces me to find one part or multiple parts of my day that were truly special and good. This section has taught me there is ALWAYS something to be grateful for, and it’s amazing how many truly magical moments we have in our lives.
Well Ramblers, that’s the gist of it. There are numerous benefits to Bullet journaling. It boosts creativity and sparks ideas, it allows for reflection and a digital detox, and it’s a good recollection of what’s going on in your life if you ever need to look back.
